Abandoned 7-month-old baby found

A seven-month-old boy was found dead in Karama Antuomo primary school in Igembe sub-county in Meru County.

According to Wilfred Nyaga, deputy headteacher, Karama Antuomo primary school, the baby was found dead outside the school’s pit latrine near the fence. He said after confirming the incident, He informed the sub-chief, who was yet to arrive at the time with police to collect the body.

“It was the students who discovered it and reported it to the teachers. I urge young mothers to avoid abortion because it is not the child’s fault to be brought into this world, said Nyaga.

According to a resident, the incident occurred around 5 a.m., and residents discovered it at 7 a.m. He strongly condemned the crime adding that the mother who committed brought a curse upon herself.

“I believe the suspect will be captured after proper investigations are done among the members of the community as the police are on their way. My advice to new mothers is that only God gives and takes. A child is a gift that should not be discarded,” said a resident.

Another eyewitness said that the members of the community who had gone to witness the incident were shocked. She said that the mother should have kept and raised the child.

“If the mother was a student, she should have spent time at home with the child before returning to her studies. Members of the community may suspect the students committed the crime, but this is not always the case. I could be a member of the community as well,” she said.

Karama Antuomo Primary School watchman said he had just finished his night shift heading home when women who had gobe to work at the school informed him that they had found a dead baby on the school grounds.

“The incident is criminal in nature, and it has a negative impact on the young students at Karama Antuomo Primary School. I’ve informed the sub-chief, who is yet to arrive on the scene, and he’ll notify the police so they can come and collect the body. It is unknown whether the child was thrown over the fence or brought into the school compound through the gate,” said the watchman.

Another resident said the baby boy was about 8 months old and appeared to be in good health. She advised young women not to abort but rather to raise a child because they chose to have one when they became pregnant.

“Young mothers should accept the child and raise it until it reaches adulthood and becomes a valuable member of society,” she said.

Another resident said that at a time when other women are struggling to have a child, the mother aborted the baby. he said the baby boy was in good health.

“If the suspect is discovered, members of the community should take action against her,” he said.

Another resident urged the police to expedite the baby’s collection because teachers were struggling to keep the lower primary students from viewing the body. Learning had also been halted.
