“More than 156” Houthi rebels have been killed in a “targeted operation” in northern Yemen in the past 24 hours, south of the strategically important city of Marib, which has been turned into a bloody battlefield since the beginning of the year, the military alliance said Monday. under the administration of Saudi Arabia.

The alliance intervened in the conflict in Yemen in late March 2015 to support the forces of the internationally recognized government who were retreating erratically in the face of the rapid advance of the Houthi rebels, who are considered to be close to Iran. The rebels have been launching a large-scale operation since February to seize Marib, the last government stronghold in the north.

Fighting in al-Abdiya, which is under siege by the Houthis, has also claimed the lives of 17 members of the government forces in the past 48 hours, a military source told AFP.

The Houthis rarely report losses to their ranks.

Al Abdiya is located in the province of Marib, about 100 kilometers south of the eponymous capital of the oil-rich region.

The escalation of the Battle of Marib intensifies what the UN calls the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world. The Agency has recently been warning more and more against the risk of a large-scale famine.

The conflict of more than seven years has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, most of them civilians, and displaced millions more, international aid organizations say.
