Chief busts cow slaughter vigilante; one arrested

A Chief along with locals of Muramba Village in Meru County caught a man involved in slaughtering a cow.

The locals sighted a cow head and limbs on the scene.  The Chief and locals caught the suspect identified as Muriithi as he was heading to Kambi direction.

The owner suspects that the culprit tethered the cow at night and slaughtered it, leaving with with internal organs. 

This was not the first incident in Muramba village. Locals suspect that the man caught was also involved in the slaughtering of a goat last month. 

Cattle, goats, and chickens have been missing mysteriously and locals were suspicious and frustrated with the cases. They implored the government to provide security for the community.

“The cow belongs to my neighbor who occasionally grazes my cows. As I was about to leave for a women’s group meeting, I heard that his cow had been slaughtered and left on the scene. The cow was expectant, and the owner its a huge loss for the owner,” said an eyewitness.

She claimed that the suspect was a resident of Kirimine and was are afraid of thieves turning on humans and slaughtering them.

“The owner would have sold the cow because the community is facing a drought, and the money would have been used to pay school fees for his children,” she said.

According to the owner, the cow was stolen at 2:00 a.m., after he had gone to bed at 1:00 a.m.

Rose, a resident, said that her goat was stolen, and two kids were left behind.

“In another incident, I was robbed of beans while returning from Ntalami at M’mutiiria, Kianjai Market. The suspect hails from Muthiru Mountain,” she said.

Rose said that there was a lot of insecurity in the Ntalami community, witchcraft practices, and women aborting their babies before dumping them in a dam.
