Residents in Meru Town have accused the county government of doing shoddy renovation works, thus causing them inconveniences.
An eyewitness said the county has actually done more harm than good. He said open deep pits on the road have made some parts of it worse than it was before they started working on it.
According to Kirimi Mpuria, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi summoned him as chairman of the Meru Municipal Board and told him that he would allocate Sh500M to the board for Meru town renovations.
“Residents have seen the progress on the repair works at the Meru town Matatu terminus after a promise was made,” said Mpuria.
A resident said that when a lorry crossed over an open deep pit concrete cover, it collapsed, demonstrating the poor quality of work done.
“We were moved from the Meru town matatu terminus to allow for renovations, but the county government did shoddy work. The correct material ratio was not used in the mixture, resulting in the collapse of concrete structures. As the damage had already begun, the metallic structures used were of low quality and had a short lifespan,” said a resident.
He said because the process was rushed, the newly renovated matatu terminus will only last three months before reverting to its former state.
According to another resident, all open deep pit concrete covers collapsed a week after the matatu terminus was reopened following renovation works.
He said the renovation works were sloppy, and the process was rushed.
A motorist said he was curious what Kiraitu did with the public money because if it had been a person who fell into the open deep pit, he would have died.
He urged the county government to redo the renovations works.
