Five soldiers were killed Tuesday in northwestern Colombia in an attack attributed to the Clan del Golfo, the strongest drug-trafficking gang in the Andean country, the general staff said.
The military was patrolling a vehicle in a rural area of the Cordoba district when it was attacked with explosives by members of the Clan del Golfo.
Five of them were killed and three others were injured, according to a statement from the staff, which said the ambush had taken place in the municipality of Puerto Libertador, an area where coca is grown, the plant whose leaves are the raw material for cocaine production.
Last week, seven Clan del Golfo members were killed in the area during security operations.

The Clan del Golfo is the largest drug trafficking gang in Colombia.
