The world is in mourning over the tragic death of DMX.

Earl Simmons, the Grammy-nominated rapper, died on April 9 at the age of 50. “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, born Earl Simmons, died at the age of 50 at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days,” his family said in a statement. “Earl was a fighter who fought until the bitter end. He adored his family with all of his heart, and we will always remember the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans worldwide, and his iconic legacy will live on in perpetuity. We are grateful for everyone’s love and support during this extremely difficult time.”

He had a heart attack at home on April 2 and was rushed to a medical center in White Plains, New York, where he was quickly placed on life support. The next day, TMZ reported that the rapper, who has been open about his history of substance abuse, had a drug overdose, which caused the heart attack. His representatives have not confirmed this.

DMX rose to prominence in the 1990s, with his debut album It’s Dark and Hell is Hot selling over 5 million copies in 1998. Over the next decade, he would dominate the rap charts with hits like “Party Up (Up in Here),” “We Right Here,” “Who We Be,” “X Gon’ Give It to Ya,” and “Where’s the Hood At?”
