Man beaten to death by mob after he allegedly tried to kill his mother

A man was beaten to death by a mob in Meru County after they accused him of attempting to kill his mother, an eyewitness reports.

Eyewitnesses say the man was set upon by the mob and murdered in Kathima village, in Kiegoi of Igembe on Wednesday.

“He is my neighbor, and we were classmates in the past. He murdered his father two years ago and was accused of murdering his stepchild too. He was also responsible for the murder of his wife,” said Bernard Kimathi.

“He was imprisoned for a long time after being arrested for murdering his father. Before his mother arrived in court on the day of the hearing, the charges were dropped. When he returned home, he threatened to cut off the heads of all family members if they did not return his property,” he said.

“According to some residents and people close to him, he claimed to have severed the heads of three people and threatened the collect the remaining seven,” he said.

“After murdering his wife, he climbed a macadamia tree, cut off branches, and placed them on her grave so that no one could see what was there. That alone demonstrates he had a bad motive,” he said.

“He threatened to kill his mother this morning, and she screamed as he chased her down. A mob retaliated by murdering him,” he said.

“He has been threatening me since he was released from jail after the charges were dropped. As parents, we gave him everything we had. His late father left him a tea farm, and I’ve never demanded anything from it,” said Eunice Nkatha, the deceased’s mother.

“I’m at a loss for words and blame the government for releasing him despite knowing he had a criminal record. I’m happy and at peace because I spent the night in the bushes after he tried to kill me the night before,” she said.
