Man returns home after spending 22 years in jail on murder charges

On April 11, 2002, David Mugambi was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

Mugambi said that he appealed against his conviction while in Kamiti Maximum Prison and was jailed for 15 years.

He said that back in prison, he enrolled in a carpentry grade one course, where I learned how to build chairs and tables.

“I also enrolled in and completed a theology course,” Mugambi said.

Mugambi expressed gratitude to the members of the community who welcomed him upon his arrival. He said that he was excited to join them in their search for God.

“I was surprised when every time a member of the community greeted me, I had to ask for their names because most of them were young before I was imprisoned and are now all grown up,” Mugambi said.

“I urge members of the community to understand that I do not recognize them when I ask for their names when I see them.

“When I got home, my brother greeted me, but I didn’t recognize him, so I asked him his name.

“I appreciate God today for giving me life and allowing me to get to where I am now. Second, ask for your forgiveness for the incident that occurred in 2001. God forgave me, therefore I ask for your forgiveness for the incident that occurred in 2001.

“The incident affected the entire village, which is why I am asking for your forgiveness. I am grateful to God for bringing me this far.

“I appreciate the wardens for looking after me when I was incarcerated as a child. I had no idea where I was going, but they guided me while I was in their care.

“They told me that if I didn’t have Christ, I wouldn’t be able to succeed in life. They aslo told me that the prison was a bad place and that I wouldn’t be able to succeed without Christ.

“I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior, and I told everyone who came in after me that Christ changes people and saves them.

“Today I want to say that if God can change me, he can certainly change you.

Those who have spoken from a team that accompanied me have stated that if one is afflicted with various diseases and facing various problems in life, there is a chance of recovery if one puts God first,” Mugambi said.
