Meru among 50 finalist cities in Global Mayors Challenge

Meru has today been presented as one of the 50 finalist cities from a competitive pool of more than 630 cities from 99 countries across the globe, after the announcement was made yesterday by Bloomberg Philanthropies 2021 Global Mayors Challenge in New York, United States of America.

The County presented an innovation in solid waste management through black soldier fly insects (locally famed as ‘Mathong’o’).

The announcement comes thanks to Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s visionary leadership in the earthworms(‘mainyo’) project which was once slandered and scathed by our political opponents, but finally entered the County into the contest against more than 600 major cities all over the world, where we have now emerged among top 50 despite the fact that Meru is not a city and from the whole of African continent, only 8 cities made it to the list.

Today’s award comes with Sh15 million technical support funding and Meru will now enter into the next phase of the competition where if we make it to the last 15, the County will be granted Sh100 million to implement the project which will help improve sanitation and sewerage systems for our people in Meru.

This is well in line with Meru Vision 2040 which aims to transform the County into a climate smart city through establishment of systems to recycle and manage the many tones of solid waste produced and at the same time create many hundreds of jobs for our youth.

The project will also expand from its existing capacity as it aims to increase production of high protein feeds for fish farming and other livestock production.

Our political opponents tried to scandalize and insult the project probably because they were not as visionary, to see where it was headed but it is firmly in line with Governor Kiraitu’s dream of Making Meru Great.
