An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck southwest China’s Yunnan province yesterday, killing three people and injuring 27 others, state television said.

The quake, with a focal depth of 8 km, was followed by aftershocks, CCTV reported.

Citing authorities, he said road sections had collapsed and landslides had disrupted some transport lines, but electricity, telephones and the internet were working.

In a tweet, the state media Global Times reported that a state of emergency had been declared and rescue operations had been launched in Dali, a city of 134,000 people in Yunnan Province, about 24km from the epicenter.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake also shook the province of Qinghai in western China on Saturday, CCTV reported.
