A train has killed three Algerian migrants in southwestern France who were lying on the rails and seriously injured a fourth migrant, police said.
Four migrants were on the train tracks near Saint-Jean-de-Luz at around 5am local time when they were hit by a train traveling to Bordeaux. Three of them died instantly, while the fourth was seriously injured, a police officer said, adding that it is not clear why they were lying on the rails.
“All the victims had Algerian citizenship,” prosecutor Jerome Bourier told BFM television, adding that three of the migrants were being investigated for staying in Spain illegally.
Eneko Mayor Aldana Duat of the neighboring city of Simbur told BFM that the area near the Spanish border is a transit point for migrants.
