Turkish secret services have killed a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) near a refugee camp in northern Iraq, where Ankara is stepping up its operations, according to official Turkish media.

According to the Anadolu agency, the intelligence services (MIT) “put in a situation that can no longer harm” Hassan Adir, also known as “Salih Tsizre”, during a “targeted operation” near the Mahmur refugee camp.

Hassan Adir was one of the PKK leaders in the Mahmur zone, according to the same source.

The agency did not provide further details on how Antir was killed. Ankara has recently intensified its drone strikes in northern Iraq, focusing its operations mainly on the Mahmur camp. Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the death of a high-ranking PKK official, Selman Bozkir, from a blow to Turkish forces in the same camp. A Kurdish lawmaker from the camp said three civilians had also been killed.

Turkey claims that the PKK controls the camp and threatens to “clear” it if the UN, under whose auspices it was set up in the 1990s, to house Kurdish refugees from Turkey, does not take action.
