DEPUTY governors who've Announced 2022 Run for Governor

DEPUTY governors of three Coast counties are expected to face political turmoil next year in a gubernatorial election.

Governor Hassan Joho of Mombasa, Amason Kingi (Kilifi) and Salim Mvurya (Kwale) are serving a second term in office which is constitutionally final.

Their deputies who are Dr William Kingi (Mombasa), Mr Gideon Saburi (Kilifi) and Ms Fatuma Achani (Kwale) have already announced resolutions to inherit the seats.

So far, only Mr Mvurya has come out in support of Ms Achani’s decision between the three governors.

Mr Kingi and Mr Saburi are confident that the primaries will be conducted in a free and fair manner as promised by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

In Kilifi County, Mr Saburi is expected to clash with Assistant Devolution Minister Gideon Mung’aro in the ODM qualifiers.

Mr Mung’aro ran for governor of 2017 through the Jubilee party, getting 56,547 votes against 218,686 votes of Governor Kingi.

Apart from Mr Mung’aro, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Kenya’s ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Dan Kazungu is among other politicians.

However, he said he was not intimidated by politicians who swallowed the seat.

“So far I am the only one who has announced my intention to run for governor of Kilifi through ODM. I am already in government and I will continue the work my boss started, ”he said.

In Mombasa County, Dr Kingi is expected to fight for an ODM ticket against Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and businessman Suleiman Shahbal.

Mr Shahbal ran for governor in 2013 and 2017 through the Wiper Party and Jubilee respectively but was defeated by Mr Joho.

Apart from them, the seat has also attracted former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar and Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, who are supporters of the UDA Party affiliated with Deputy President William Ruto.

“We will all meet in debt and each of us will fight for his place and I will emerge the winner. I have been the deputy governor for four years now and we have achieved many things for the community, ”said Dr Kingi.

To date, most ODM MPs in Mombasa have announced their support for Mr Nassir, with Mr Joho’s councilors and close allies leaning towards Mr Shahbal.

In Kwale County, Ms Achani, a Jubilee member, has not announced whether she will use the party to run for governor next year.
