Discharge for the world's smallest baby: Born weighing as much as an apple, he returns home 13 months later

A baby who is considered the smallest in the world at birth, was discharged from a Singapore hospital after 13 months of intensive care.

Kwek Yu Xuan weighed only 212 grams – the weight of an apple – when she was born and was 24 centimeters tall. He was born just before 25 weeks, well before the average of 40 weeks.

The record was held by a girl in the US who weighed 245 grams at birth in 2018, according to the University of Iowa Register of Youngest Babies.

Yu Xuan was born by emergency caesarean section four months earlier after her mother was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a dangerously high blood pressure that can damage vital organs and be fatal to both mother and baby. Yu Xuan now weighs 6.3 kg.

According to the National University Hospital of Singapore, the little girl had “limited chances of survival”. “Against the odds, with health complications at birth, she inspired the people around her with her perseverance and growth, which makes her an excellent ‘Covid-19’ baby – a ray of hope in the midst of turmoil,” the hospital said. in his announcement.

During her hospital stay, Yu Xuan received multiple treatments and relied on different types of machines to survive.

Doctors say her health and development have gone well under their care and she is now well enough to be discharged. According to the BBC, the little girl is still suffering from chronic lung disease and will need respiratory help at home. However, doctors at Singapore National University Hospital say her condition is expected to improve over time.

The girl’s mother, Wong Mei Ling, told local media that Yu Xuan’s birth and size were shocking because her first child – a four-year-old boy – was born normally.

Finally, it is noted that Yu Xuan’s parents were able to pay for her long stay in the hospital through a crowdfunding campaign that raised over 310,000 euros.
