A 50-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant in Charanga, Tigania in Meru County.
Assistant chief Samuel Igweta confirmed the incident, adding that at 7:30 a.m., the elephants arrived from the Karithiria Forest, which borders Imenti and Tigania, and proceeded to Macaku, where they encountered the deceased, Peter Mururu.
“The deceased left behind a small family of seven children and a wife who are struggling to make ends meet. Because of the family problem of educating children, we found employment for the wife at Thinyaine Day Secondary School,” he said.

“From the looks of things, he’d gone in search of pasture because he had a machette. We are experiencing difficulties, particularly with school-age children, who are required to arrive at school very early in the morning when elephants begin invading our village,” he said.

“We urge our government to have wildlife officers patrol our village to keep elephants at bay. The elephants were in herds and caused extensive damage to the crops of people who farmed along rivers,” he said.

“At 7:05 a.m., I heard screams and when I got out of the house, I discovered that elephants had invaded the village. I’m furious because this is the second time an elephant has killed a member of our community,” said Stephen Gikundi, the area manager.

“A cousin of the deceased was killed by elephants in 2019. As a community, we are outraged that no action is taken when elephants kill people. Elephants are invading our farms and destroying our crops. We wonder if an elephant’s life is more valuable than a human’s life because it appears that they are being prioritized,” he said.

“It also appears that elephants are more important than our crops, as we are on the verge of a hunger strike. We have never been paid since the elephants began to kill people and destroy our crops. Nobody has ever responded to our complaints, not even the MCA or the MP,” he said.

“Despite the fact that the deceased’s body has been on the scene for several hours, none of the leaders have responded, even after being informed,” he said.

“We are astounded by the elephants which came to disturb us early in the morning after the children went to school. Our children usually get up early in the morning to attend day schools. We heard screams after the children left for school and wondered if the elephants had attacked them,” said Ann Mwari, a resident.

“We spotted the elephants heading in the direction of Kiare as we pondered what had transpired. The elephants came across Mururu, a guy on his way to get his daily bread. He was thrown to the ground and stomped to death. Every year, an elephant kills someone. We are pleading with the authorities to assist us,” she said.Also Read: Also Read:
