Eleven teenagers drowned and two are in critical condition after trying to cross a river on foot, during a trip to Indonesia

About 150 members of a Muslim scout group, aged 13 to 15, were walking along the banks of the Cileuleur River when 21 of them tried to cross it on foot.

Residents managed to save the ten, said Supriono, a search and rescue official in Badug, a town in western Java.

“Two students (…) are in critical condition in the hospital, while 11 were found dead,” he told AFP.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident and to verify that all participants in this trip were found.

The students took part in the trip to clean up the river, despite warnings from the National Disaster Prevention Agency.

Hiking along the rivers is prohibited for children and teenagers during the rainy season, which begins in late November.
