Kiminini MP Wamalwa proposes review of election laws to end early campaigns

Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa has called for a review of election laws to prevent politicians from participating in early campaigns.

Despite the fact that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has not announced the official start of the campaign following the 2022 general election, politicians have begun organizing public rallies.

Led by Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga and leaders of the One Kenya Alliance (OKA), the wing includes Musalia Mudavadai (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetangula (Ford-Kenya) and Gideon Moi ( KANU), have been touring various parts of the country in what appears to be a search for votes to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta next year.

“It is amazing to see those in government, led by the President and his deputy, and the ODM leader are leading the campaign even before the IEBC allows it to start,” Mr Chris said, speaking in Nairobi.

When the IEBC officially declares a campaign to remove the anchor, it is legal to punish politicians who violate election rules, including those who incite violence and violence.

Following the campaigns launched by some leaders and politicians, violence has erupted which raises concerns about the 2022 elections.

The MP is proposing that the election laws be reviewed, in order to give the IEBC more power to punish instigators of violence even before announcing the campaign.

“At the moment our electoral commission has no authority because the time to allow campaigns to pull off the anchor has not arrived,” Dr Chris said.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has released a list of some areas that are likely to witness violence before, during and after the general election. They include Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa and Nakuru.

Mr Chris Wamalwa’s statement came a day after the Deputy President claimed that public meetings that he had been organizing in various parts of the country were “to review government development projects and launch them”.

Dr Ruto also said he had not started a campaign, in his bid to enter the White House in 2022, a statement that has been seen as ridiculous. He has been using public rallies to attack his opponents, similar to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

For civil servants who are running for office, they are required to resign six months before the election, which means they will have to take such action in February 2021.

According to the current Constitution, launched in 2010 and coming into force in 2013, elections must be held in August, every year. after five years.
