Gloom enveloped Gakoromone village in Meru County after the remains of a landlord were found in his house.
Our correspondent, who visited the area, saw residents and tenants at the deceased’s apartment as the news of the tragedy spread.
Concerned tenants and members of the community were said to have found his body lifeless in his house with a stab wound.
A resident said he used to see the deceased every now and then and was curious why he chose to end his life despite owning an apartment full of tenants.
“I’m trying to figure out how much stress he was under that drove him to commit suicide. I’m stunned because he was a friend of mine, and I’ve come to witness it for myself. I was astounded to learn that he stabbed himself with a knife.”
According to another resident, the deceased didn’t appear to be facing any financial difficulties. He advised people to think twice before committing suicide. He said the deceased left a substantial estate.
“For a man to decide to end his life there must be something that has disturbs him a lot. People should not hurriedly commit suicide because I don’t see any good thing in ending your life and leaving this earth and yet you have property.”
“I’m a hustler struggling to make ends meet, and I can’t even bear the thought of taking my own life. There must be a problem for someone to consider ending their life. No one can end his or her life without a reason.”
A resident said wives occasionally cause their husbands to commit suicide, but it is not always the case.
“If someone is depressed by his wife and wants to end his life, he should leave the relationship and start a new life, but you are to commit suicide.”
A resident urged the national government to hold seminars so that they can talk to people in society who are depressed. He said nowadays, all people can think about is committing suicide, whether by taking pills, stabbing themselves, or hanging themselves.
“Because people are so stressed in society, the government should hire psychologists to speak to them in the form of a seminar. For example, at the moment, schools have been closed for one week and reopened.”
“After a short period of time, the parent is expected to pay Ksh 10,000 in fees. Because the parents are so stressed, the national government should understand them right now. It is the reason why so many people commit suicide.”
According to a resident, people are living carelessly as a result of their stress.
