The National Council of churches has recommended that the constitutional amendment forces be postponed until 2022 general elections.

NCCK says this is regardless of the Court of Appeal decision, as this comes barely a day after Court of Appeals President Justice Daniel Musinga constituted a seven-judge bench to hear the matter from next Tuesday.

NCCK declares its position during the lower eastern region clergy conference in Machakos town.

The chapter chairman reverend Joseph Mutungi called for IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati’s resignation for his recent comments tha the Commission last capacity to conduct the 2022 general election.

NCCK maintained that IEBC had four years to prepare for elections thus Wabukati’s comments cast doubt on the credibility of the coming election.

“NCCK conference has noted with deep concern, the report presented to the Senate by the chairman and the acting chief executive officer of the independent electoral and boundaries Commission IEBC, that the body is not ready for their 2022 general elections,” said Mutungi.

“This is a gross failure on the part of the commissioners and the secretariat, who had four years to prepare knowing that the general elections are already scheduled in the constitution of Kenya,” he said.

The chapter chairman reverend Joseph Mutungi added that the commissioners should be aware that such negative sentiments could cause Kenyans to question the credibility of the coming election leading to conflict and violence.
