THE debate over the date of the 2022 General Elections has sparked speculation, with politicians loyal to Deputy President William Ruto threatening to sue the government for the United Nations (UN).

Nyali MP Mohamed Ali and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar said the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, which Dr Ruto hopes to use for the 2022 presidency, will not allow the election to be postponed.

“We will oppose this and even write a letter to the United Nations (UN) Security Council stating that Kenya is not at war, and therefore the government should put in place measures to ensure that elections are held as planned,” said Mr Omar.

Last week, the African Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued a statement to African nations that will not be able to hold elections because of the corona crisis, with a view to postponing it; provided that there are national laws that allow for the postponement of General Elections.

The Constitution requires General Elections to be held in the fifth year after each election, in the second Tuesday of August.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already announced elections will be held on August 9, 2022.
