17 killed in festive shootings

Must read

At least 17 people have been killed in a series of shootings in Kabul, news agencies reported today, after sources in the Taliban said their fighters had taken control of Pansir, the last province in Afghanistan to resist the Islamist group.

Opposition leaders in the Taliban have denied that the province was occupied.

Samsad news agency reported that “shots fired in the air” yesterday, Friday, in Kabul claimed the lives of 17 people and injured 41. The Tolo news agency broadcast the same report.

At least 14 people have been injured in a series of shootings in Nangarhar province, east of the capital, said Gulzada Sangar, a hospital spokeswoman in the provincial capital Jalalabad.

The fire sparked a backlash from the Taliban’s main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

“Avoid shooting in the air and instead thank God,” Mujahid wrote in a Twitter message. “Bullets can hurt civilians, so do not shoot unnecessarily.”
