A woman and her child were killed overnight when a fire tore through a Twalama village home in Meru County, eyewitnesses said.

An eyewitness responded to the concrete home in Tigania Sub-County about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, DeKalb fire spokesman Capt. Dion Bentley said that the fire began in the bedroom and spread throughout the house.

She requested me from the inside to find a way to help her child, and when I went to look for solutions, I was met with massive flames on my way back. The doors were tightly locked from the inside, and she claimed that she couldn’t find the keys. Her car was parked near the house and I enlisted the help of the neighbors to push it,” he said.

According to the eyewitness, it became difficult to move the car on time as the gear was engaged before the flames got into the car and burned it down. He said that he only managed to save the cattle that were located next to the house.

A resident said that the closest firefighting vehicle was located in Meru town, and it would have taken a long time to arrive on the scene.

“Each of the three regions of Meru County, in my opinion, should have its own fire truck. The Kiraitu Murungi government has many leaders who come from Tigania, including the deputy governor and majority leader. They should advocate for this region to have its own firefighting vehicle,” he said.

He said that Tigania Sub County was confronted with a water shortage, making it difficult to extinguish house fires as the water for drinking alone was in short supply.

He said that the Meru County government should educate the public about the fire and rescue department and make their phone numbers available.
