The perpetrator is 63-year-old Julio Aponte, a man who according to the authorities systematically monitored and threatened his ex-wife in the Dominican Republic.
The outrageous incident took place on June 14 at a bus stop in the Washington Heights area.
The 63-year-old approached his wife and while she was shouting at her “how dare you cheat on me?” he continued to hit her violently with a crowbar until she fell unconscious on the ground.
On Monday, police announced that the 49-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries on Friday at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York, the New York Daily News wrote .
The couple’s neighbors stated that the perpetrator drank too much. The victim was said to be a “devoted mother” of a teenage son.
Eyewitnesses called for immediate action when the killer escaped on his motorcycle. After being chased, he confessed to his heinous crime and surrendered to the authorities.
Prosecutors have charged Aponte with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault, and he has been remanded in custody without bail.
Kelly was taken to hospital on June 14 shortly after the attack but was unable to recover . According to prosecutors, he had fractures in his skull due to the beating and suffered multiple heart attacks.
