64 hospitalized after eating meat from a camel carcass

In an interview with Baite TV, Dr. Wachira urged residents to submit dead animals for a medical examination before consumption.

On the first day, he said, they received 64 patients from Igembe central subcounty. There were 37 patients, three of whom were admitted. The remaining 34 patients were treated and released.

The hospital received 37 patients from the same village the next day, all of whom claimed to have eaten dead camel meat. Two of them were admitted, and the remaining 25 were treated and discharged.

All of the patients presented with the same symptoms, which included vomiting, stomach pains, and diarrhea. “In medical terms, it’s called food poisoning, and it’s caused by microorganisms living in the food,” Dr Wachira explained. He also stated that the patients exhibited no anthrax symptoms, such as a fever around the neck.

One of the three admitted patients, a 13-year-old girl, tragically died. She had too much diarrhea by the time she was rushed to the hospital. She’d also lost a lot of water and was suffering from multiorgan failure.

This resulted in complications with the heart, kidneys, and other vital organs. The doctors had tried everything they could to save her life two days before, using all of the necessary medical equipment.

The girl never displayed any other troubling symptoms that would have necessitated her transfer to another hospital. She was eventually transferred to the hospital morgue.

Everyone else who was admitted recovered and was allowed to go home.

According to the doctor, the meat consumed was contaminated with bacteria microorganisms, resulting in stomach pains and vomiting, also known as gastroenteritis in medical terms.

He urged the residents to eat meat that had been examined by veterinarians and health professionals whose responsibility it is to ensure the meat’s safety.

He also urged family gatherings and parties to consult with health experts before slaughtering any animal.
