83 have been identified – 22 people are still missing

The death toll from a building collapse in Florida in late June has risen to 94, local officials said today, noting that the identification of the bodies has become more complicated over time.

Among the bodies, 83 have been identified but this process “is becoming more and more difficult as time goes on, ” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levine Cava on the 19th day of the investigation.

And although 22 people remain missing, “people who have died may remain on the missing list until they are identified,” he told reporters.

Identifying the bodies “is very methodical and sensitive (process) and takes time ,” Levine Kava added , urging families to be patient.

The operations are being carried out at the site of the collapse of the 12-storey building by county police and medical examiners, who are comparing the genetic code of human remains with samples of genetic material obtained from the families of the missing.

As for the clearing of the point from the debris, it is making “great progress”, the mayor stated today without giving a date for the end of the operations.
