President seeks House approval of nominees to the IEBC

The President has nominated persons to the four vacant positions in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

This follows the conclusion of Interviews on the candidates by the Selection Panel on the Appointment of Commissioners to the IEBC and submission of the Panel’s report to H.E. The President.

The four; Ms. Juliana Whonge Cherera, Mr. Francis Mathenge Wanderi, Ms. Irene Cherop Masit and Mr. Justus Abonyo Nyang’aya are among the 36 candidates who were shortlisted and interviewed by the Selection Panel last month.

The President has also forwarded their curricula vitae and the Report of the Selection Panel which was chaired by Dr. Elizabeth Muli.

In a Message to the National Assembly yesterday afternoon,the Presiding Officer Hon. Christopher Omulele informed Members that the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Justin Muturi had received a message from the President nominating the four and is now seeking the approval of the National Assembly.

“His Excellency the President, having received the Report of the Selection Panel for the Appointment of Commissioners of the IEBC and in accordance with the procedure set out in Section 7A of the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission Act, 2011 (Act No. 9 of 2011) as read together with the First Schedule to the Act and Sections 3 and 5 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act (Act No. 33 of 2011) , is now seeking the approval of the National Assembly…”, read a section of the Communication to the House.

The nomination now stands committed to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.

Pursuant to section 8 (1) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, the National Assembly has twenty-eight days (28) to undertake the necessary approval hearings of the nominees and consider the matter.

The Committee has further been directed to expeditiously notify the nominees and the general public of the time and place for holding the approval hearings.
