A forest fire in southern Turkey is approaching a power station, according to local authorities, a day after firefighters set fire to another thermal power plant in the same area as fires raged in southern Turkey for a tenth day.

Hundreds of thousands of acres have been burned in the southern provinces by fires that President Tayyip Erdogan called “the worst ever.” Eight people have lost their lives and thousands of Turks and foreign tourists have fled the scene.

A fire in the province of Mugla , where the resorts of Bodrum (Alikarnassos) and Marmaris are located , has approached the Yenikei thermal power plant at 5 km, according to a source in the forest service.

Extensive security measures have been taken around the station as the fire has approached the nearby Birkey area, according to the municipality of Milas where the station is located.

Firefighters have rushed to the area from Marmaris, where the fires have been extinguished.

Twelve ongoing fires Strong winds and temperatures above 40 ° have contributed to the spread of the fires. A fire threatened the Kemerkei power plant on the Mediterranean coast, about 15km from Yenikei station, but the fire was brought under control yesterday.

Firefighters have put 196 fires under control in the last ten days, while 12 forest fires are ongoing.

The province of Mugla is one of the most affected areas in Turkey. According to local authorities, 550,000 acres have been burned there – more than double what was burned last year across Turkey – and 36,000 people have been displaced .

The Turkish authorities are accused of lack of preparation, as official figures show that only a small part of the already reduced resources for fire prevention have been spent.
