The World Bank has suspended aid to Sudan following a military coup that toppled the African country’s transitional government.
” I’m very concerned about the recent events in Sudan and I’m afraid of the dramatic impact they could have on the country ‘s social and economic recovery and development, ” said World Bank President David Malpas.
The US government has already announced that it has suspended $ 700 million in financial aid to Sudan and is considering imposing sanctions .
For its part, the International Monetary Fund has said it is closely monitoring developments in Sudan. However, an IMF spokeswoman said it would be ” premature ” to comment on the ” impact ” the military coup would have on Sudan’s relations with the Washington financial institution .
The two institutions suspended cooperation with Myanmar after the February 1st military coup and with Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power on August 15th.
