Two people were injured following a single-vehicle crash in Meru County.

Eyewitnesses say the crash occurred in Mwirine village in Imenti. One of the car occupants was taken to hospital with serious to non-life-threatening injuries. Another occupant was taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to an eyewitness.

The cause of the crash was overspeeding, according to an eyewitness.

“I was walking down the pedestrian walkway with a friend, a teacher by profession, when he told me that he suspected the car was being driven recklessly and was speeding. I narrowly avoided death after the car landed in the trench in front of us as soon as we got off the sidewalk. The car had two occupants, one of whom was seriously injured and the other suffered minor injuries,” said an eyewitness.

He said that they did not get the opportunity to question the occupants in their current state.

A resident said that near the scene, there existed a blackspot where cars were occasionally involved in accidents due to a sharp bend.

“We implore the government install speed bumps to reduce the likelihood of future accidents. Drunk driving, inexperienced driving, and excessive speeding are the root causes of the increasing number of accidents,”he said.

An eyewitness said that the soil bumps erected by members of the community were quickly deteriorating. He said that if the government had installed modern speed bumps, the accident would not have occurred.
