14 dead, dozens injured in bloodiest protests since military coup

Fourteen protesters were killed in Khartoum on Wednesday in the bloodiest mobilization since the October 25 military coup.

The army has cut off all communications in the country since the morning.

According to the pro-democracy union, 14 people were killed, eleven of them in the northern suburbs of the capital, where protests continued until late at night.

Most of the victims and dozens injured sustained gunshot wounds to the head, neck or torso, the union added.

The Sudanese Professional Union, an organization that spearheaded the 2019 uprising that ousted dictator Omar al-Bashir, has accused security forces of “premeditated killings”.

The repression started from the first day of the coup but today it reached new levels. Before the incidents began, the military authorities cut off all telephone communications. The opposition was currently organizing with messages on mobile phones or even graffiti on the walls. The internet has been down since October 25.

“Today the repression is fierce, there is a lot of violence, tear gas and flash bombs,” Soha, a 42-year-old protester, told AFP. “I saw a bullet wound in the back that made too many arrests,” he added.

Hundreds of protesters remain on the roadblocks until late tonight, mainly in the northern suburbs of the city. Security forces fired tear gas even into hospitals, according to doctors.
