A man armed with an automatic assault rifle opened fire on Friday night in central Kosovo against a bus carrying students , killing a boy and a girl, as well as the driver, police said.
Another 14-year-old student was injured, but his condition is stable, Skender Dresay, head of a hospital near the site of the attack , told state television RTK .
According to local media, the perpetrator was wearing balaclava and was equipped with an AK-47 . His motives remain unknown at this stage.
The bus was full of students returning home from school, the mayor of Glodjan village (centrally), Mustafa Selmani, told RTK.
Kosovo President Viosa Osmani condemned the attack and called on police to find and arrest the perpetrator or perpetrators as soon as possible and bring him or her to justice. She spoke of a “blow to security and public order” in a post on her Facebook account.
“We believe the perpetrator was one and we are doing everything we can to find out what happened and to find him,” Peja police deputy commander Veton Elsani told Reuters.
The attack took place about 90 kilometers south of Pristina.
A source close to the police who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said there was no indication that the attack was a terrorist act.
According to Kosovo media, the attack may be linked to the underworld and the dispute between two bus companies . The information could not be confirmed by official or other sources.
