The government has declared Friday, May 14, 2021, as a public holiday to allow Muslims in Kenya to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i announced this in a Gazette Notice issued on Friday.
“It is hereby notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Friday, 14th May, 2021, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” the notice states.
Muslims all over the world begin the day with the Eid prayer to commemorate the festival of Eid al Fitr.
The day is spent with friends and family, who get together to eat and exchange gifts.
This year, however, Muslims will have to deal with the complications caused by the new coronavirus, which has resulted in the government prohibiting large gatherings.
