Israel says attacks on a densely populated Palestinian enclave have killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander and left a crater in a seven-story building that the Israeli military says was used by Islamist leaders in Hamas.

At the same time, rocket fire broke out in response to the assassination of Islamic Jihad leader Hussein Abu Harbid, sending Israelis to bomb shelters, and there were direct attacks on a synagogue in Ashkelon and an apartment building in Ashdon.
