Shocking photos: Lava cuts a Congolese city in two [images]

At least 15 people have been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a volcanic eruption , according to local sources in the AP, although it is still unclear how many died.

In fact, relevant photographs by the Associated Press show that lava from Mount Niragongo covered the city of Buena, north of Goma.

The blast forced thousands of people to flee the weekend, according to a United Nations spokesman, and hundreds of homes were destroyed.

The volcano last erupted in 2002, killing 250 people and leaving 120,000 homeless.

Goma, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, “escaped” the lava of the Niragongo volcano that erupted on Saturday night, according to the military governor of the region.

“The lava stopped near the town of Buena, on the outskirts of Goma, the town was spared,” said General Konstantin Dima in a short speech broadcast by the public media.

“Many thefts in clothing stores and an attempt to escape prisoners” from the city jail have been recorded, but “the situation is under control,” he assured.

In the suburbs of Buena, “houses were destroyed by lava,” the general said, without giving a numerical account of the damage.
