A huge sinkhole with a diameter of more than 60 meters and a depth of 20 meters opened in a field in the state of Puebla, Mexico. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far and houses in the surrounding area have been evacuated.
“What worries me is that we do not know how big it can get underground, we do not know if the water is running or stagnant, there are rumors that there are animals and there are rumors that there is sulfur,” said local resident Letitia Perez.
In turn, the governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa Huerta, has already sent experts to the area to investigate the causes of the sinking and promised compensation to the affected families.
According to scientists, the sinkhole could be the result of a geological fault and different hydrographic variants in the soil and subsoil. However, residents and local activists blame the phenomenon of over-exploitation of aquifers by large industrial.
