A suspected motorcycle thief who escaped lynching by the whiskers is in the custody of the police in Muriri, Tigania, Meru County after a mob that caught him and reportedly beat him to a pulp, commendably handed him over to the police.

Sources in the area say the suspect hired a motorcycle and asked to be driven to Kangeta but later turned on the rider, brandished a knife and attempted to steal the motorcycle between the hours of 10-11 pm yesterday evening.

The suspect said he spoke with Joy over the phone and agreed to meet. He boarded a vehicle shortly before 10:00 p.m and when he arrived to meet her, she had turned her phone off. He decided to return, but couldn’t find a vehicle.

“I went to a bar and drank a bottle of beer before leaving with two men. One of them was named Mwenda, and the other was unknown, but all I know is that he lived with a man named Ndaaso. Ndaaso lives at Muriungi’s place.
“Mwenda began yelling and accusing me of stealing a motorcycle as we walked,” said the suspect.

The suspect’s wife arrived from Kangeta in Meru County to respond to allegations that her husband was a thief.
“We have three children together, two of whom are twins. We own a kiosk in Kangeta and spend most of our time there. With his ex-wife, Joy, they had one child named Eda,” she said.
