At least 43 people were killed and dozens more injured when a train derailed and collided with another train in southern Pakistan this morning.
Rescuers took hours to pull some trapped passengers out of the wreckage.
The bomber struck shortly after 3:30 a.m. local time near the northern city of Daharki in Sindh province, according to a Pakistani railway official. At that time, most of the 1,200 passengers on both trains were asleep.
One train derailed and then hit the second, coming from the opposite direction.
“We fell on top of each other, but we did not suffer anything serious,” Akhtar Rajput, a passenger on the Millat Express, derailed the train. “Then another train came out of nowhere and hit us. “When I got together, I saw passengers lying on the floor next to me, others were trying to get out of the wagon,” he continued.
The Millat Express was en route from Karachi to the city of Sardoga when it derailed and fell on the lines. At that time the Sir Syed Exress, which had started from Rawalpindi, was coming from the opposite direction.
According to Information Minister Fawad Chondri, the two accidents occurred within minutes.
