117 killed in violence

Violent incidents that have rocked South Africa for nearly a week have killed 117 people, the government said on Thursday, revising its previous death toll to 72. Many have also been injured in riots that broke out in various parts of the country last week.

The area around Johannesburg is “very calm”, said Minister Hubunjo Nsavheni, adding that the death toll there was 26, which should be added to the 91 deaths in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. the violent episodes began.

The minister also said 10,000 South African soldiers had been deployed on the streets since Thursday morning to end days of looting and violence.

“By this morning, 10,000 troops had already been deployed on the ground, which means an increase of 5,000 troops from yesterday morning,” he added during a press conference.

More than 2,200 have been arrested. Among them, the minister said, is a man who claimed to be the instigator behind the looting wave.
