Couple married four times in one month to get more days off

Must read

An original way was found by a couple from Taiwan to maximize their honeymoon. Wanting to make the most of the leave that the newlyweds are entitled to, the couple got married four times in just over a month.

“Some citizens do not stop at anything in order to take advantage of certain privileges,” said Taipei’s director general of employment.

By law, businesses in Taiwan are required to offer eight days paid leave to newlyweds. According to authorities, last year, a bank clerk applied for 32 days off, having resorted to this trick. In a period of 37 days, he and his wife were married four times and divorced three times, asking for eight days for each of their marriages.

When the bank denied the request for leave, the employee appealed to the Taipei General Directorate of Employment, which fined his employer Taiwan $ 20,000 (590 euros) for violating the permit arrangements. By law, there is no limit to how often an employee can apply for marriage leave.

The bank was willing to offer only eight days off to its employee and claimed that the man had “taken advantage” of the law. The case provoked strong reactions on social media against the employee, who took advantage of a “window” of the law.

“Incredibly, this guy is playing with his marriages and divorces. What if he wants to get married and divorce every day? “He should receive sick leave rather than marriage leave,” a user wrote on social media.

Last week, the General Directorate of Employment canceled the fine imposed on the bank and in a statement “acknowledged that a mistake had been made.” This was not the first time Taiwanese citizens have taken advantage of the law. Last March, more than a hundred people, mostly young people, changed their first name to “Gui Wu” (salmon) to take advantage of a restaurant offering free sushi with the word ‘salmon’ in it.
