The kidnappers who raided a boarding school in northern Nigeria earlier this month have released 28 children, but another 81 remain in captivity , according to a pastor involved in negotiations for their release.

A first group of 28 children was released two days after the raid. “Twenty-eight students were released this morning,” Reverend Joseph Hayabb told Reuters by telephone. “A number of students managed to escape; but 81 remain prisoners .”

Nigerian authorities attribute the abductions to armed gangs of robbers seeking ransom.

Police and the Cantona State Homeland Security Inspector have not yet commented.
