Air Force C-130 plane crash kills 50 people

Authorities in the Philippines have recovered the black box of an Air Force C-130 transport plane that crashed on Sunday, killing more than 50 people, the country’s national defense chief told Reuters today. Asia, Lieutenant General Cyrilito Sobehana.

The pilot, extremely experienced in this type of aircraft, was killed in his crash on the island of Holo, said Lt. Gen. Sobehana, who spoke to Reuters by telephone.

According to the latest report, a total of 52 people, 49 soldiers and three civilians on the ground, were killed and another 51 were injured.

The shuttle, built by the American Lockheed, transported members of the armed forces who were to take part in operations against jihadists. He left the runway after landing at Holo Airport. The military said there was no indication that it had been attacked.

Sulu, 950 km south of the capital Manila, is the epicenter of the Abu Sayyaf jihadist group.
