In a bizarre incident, an attempted theft at an Mpesa shop in Maua in Meru County was thwarted when the suspect was caught by members of the public.
The shop owner said she had returned to her shop and found the suspect looking for money at the counter.
“Another woman came into my shop and told me that her phone had been stolen. I followed her back to her shop to see what had happened. Fortunately, I had not left any money behind. After stealing from another woman named Ann, the suspect was forgiven. She also has a pending theft case against a woman named Karimi,” said Jacinta.
She claimed that she had been robbed at the shop on several occasions.
“The first time I was I lost Ksh 18,000, the second time I lost Ksh 8,000 and a phone. I lost Ksh 46,000 for the third time in January of this year. It’s painful to apprehend a suspect who attempted to steal from my shop. I believe she has been stealing from me the entire time,” said Jacinta.
Jacinta strongly urged the authorities to take legal action against the suspect.
According to the suspect, the shop owner saw her standing near the counter and assumed she was planning a heist.
She later changed her tune, promising not to steal again and to look for work.
