Medical staff say Mutuati residents in Igembe, Meru County were hospitalized after eating meat tainted infected with Anthrax.

Mutuati Medical Staff, Kirimi, told Baitet Tv that the hospital received 18 patients on November 15, all of whom are currently in stable condition. He said some of those admitted to the wards were discharged, while the majority are still on medication.

“We received 11 more today, and all are on medication and in stable condition. To avoid a repeat of the incident, we are educating them on the dangers of consuming contaminated meat. Patients become dehydrated as a result of diarrhea after eating anthrax-infected meat,” said Kirimi.

He said to prevent patients from dying from dehydration, they administered body fluids into their bodies as they continued to vomit and diarrhea.

“The fluids administered to their bodies contain anthrax-curing medication. Among the admitted patients is an expectant mother who has been admitted and is in stable condition,” said Kirimi.

A patient said that she came across a cow carcass in the forest and cut a piece of meat from it. She said she prepared it and served it to her husband and children when she got home.

“We drank the soup later before becoming ill. We ate the meat because they were on a hunger strike,” she said.

Nkunja Maore I want to thanked the medical staff for taking care of the patients as soon as he took them to hospital.

“I’d like to inform the government that the residents did not consume the meat voluntarily, but rather because they are on a hunger strike. I strongly urge the County government to intervene and provide food to residents, particularly those in Kibutine village. Crops such as Miraa have dried up as a result of the ongoing drought, and people are living in extreme poverty,” said Nkunja.

He implored Hon. George Kaliunga and Kiraitu Murungi intervene and donate food disbursed by the national government to the residents.
