At least seven people were killed when a boat capsized five nautical miles from Lampedusa. According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, four of the dead are women. One of them was to give birth in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, police sources say there are still nine missing. An investigation has already been launched to determine the details of the tragic event.
Meanwhile, in Lampedusa, the center for temporary accommodation of immigrants and refugees is again overcrowded. Authorities are trying to evacuate some of the 660 people in the facility to various parts of Sicily or to special vessels used to quarantine the “desperate at sea”.
