A child has escaped injury after a fire broke out in their family house in Ndiine-Iment.
According to a family member, firefighters were called to the scene in the village but never responded. However, residents were able to extinguish the blaze.
The baby was checked over at the scene by locals , but didn’t need hospital treatment. The cause of the fire isn’t yet known.
A family member said that her mother’s house was on fire when she arrived after hearing loud screams.
“She was unable to recover anything because she was at her sweet potato farm. She has lost a lot of property.
“Boys and girls gathered whatever they could find and rushed to a nearby river to get water until they were able to extinguish the fire. I am pleading with well-wishers to assist my mother,” she said.
Rebecca Karimi, the owner of the house said that when the incident occurred, she was at the farm harvesting sweet potatoes.
“When I heard screams, I assumed they were from my grandchild and that my mother had fallen from her chair. My house had been reduced to ashes when I rushed to see what had happened.
“I lost everything, including money given to me by our women’s group,” she said.
The mother of the child said she had gone to the farm with her mother and had left the child at home.
“I’m thankful that my child, who is in PP2, escaped unharmed. We shared the house with my mother and another child who is in secondary school. Everything we owned was destroyed by the fire,” she said.
