Bishop Hon. Kawira Mwangaza – Operation Okolea Mercy

Must read

Residents of Ntirimiti in Meru County approached Bishop Hon. Kawira Mwangaza with a unique challenge they were facing during one of her community visits to issue bursaries and cash grants.

Gaceri, a young mother suffering from mental illnesses, had fled from home, and her father, a single parent, had gone looking for her in Nkubu town, more than 20 kilometers away.

The major challenge was Gaceri’s lack of a place to live if the father was successful in finding his daughter. There is only one shelter at Gaceri’s home, which houses his father.

According to one of the area residents, Gaceri was living in a rented room while working at Timau prior to the onset of her mental illnesses.

And it was after her mental illness that she became pregnant and gave birth to a child, who is now two years old and being fostered by Catholic nuns. (May God bless them.)

Aware that the NGAAF fund (National Government Affirmative Action Fund) does not provide for housing, my family and I made a personal sacrifice to put up a shelter and provide food and clothing to the young mother.

The Message, James 1:27

“True religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.”

Bishop Hon. Kawira Mwangaza’s call to the Meru community

Women without housing face unique health challenges and outcomes that require specific types of care and support. Domestic and sexual violence are the leading causes of homelessness among women.

Additionally, women affected by homelessness are also more likely to have a mental illness, not to mention that proper pre-and postnatal care may be difficult to access for mothers without stable housing.
