A man who went missing from Imenti, Meru county nearly two weeks ago has been found dead in the Mariara River near the Mutongi Bridge, a resident said on Thursday.

Julius Muthamia was last seen on a Friday evening in May 2021, according to his sister. Muthamia left his house, and his wife alerted neighbors, who went on the lookout for him. He appeared to be mentally ill when he returned and chased his wife with a panga. He had vanished by the time she returned home.

“We looked for him again in rivers and bushes, but never found him. A group of 50 young men conducted another search and were unable to locate him and informed the authorities.

“When we were informed that a teacher from a nearby school had discovered a man in a river, we immediately identified him when we arrived at the scene. We appreciate the teacher’s assistance in helping us locate him. Before his demise, he had gone to the hospital and was given medicines,” she said.

Another resident said he was shocked and expressed his condolences to the family. He was grateful to a group of young men who had dedicated themselves to finding the deceased.

“It’s a tragic incident, but it’s also suspicious because the water current cannot drown a person. We will live it for God,” he said.
Another resident said that the deceased was a saved man, had no quarrels with anyone, cared about the people, and was a significant figure. “He was mentally ill and had one child with his wife,” she said.

Another resident said they had met about 2-3 weeks ago when he had gone to his home to look for building stones. “When I told him there were none, he said he would go look for them at Mr. Murugu’s place. I did not hear from him since,” he said.

The sub-area said they had looked everywhere for him, including a hole created by a falling star many years ago. “His shoes were discovered on a road, and a group of young men searched the area but were unable to locate him,” he said.
