A bridge collapsed in Seelze near Hanover. A construction worker has died. Another was slightly injured. The cause is still unclear.
A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. near Hanover. According to a press release from the Hanover police, a new pedestrian bridge was to be built over the Leine in the Letter district near Seelze. Work on the bridge only started on Tuesday.
“An element that had already been set up (support pillar) came loose for a previously unknown cause,” the police report said. The pillar had therefore buried a construction worker under it. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. At first it was reported that two construction workers had been buried. Another worker was slightly injured and taken to a hospital. The police had initially announced that he was seriously injured in the accident.
A crane was used to rescue the fatally injured construction worker and to lift the damaged part of the bridge. The police and fire brigade were on duty at the site of the accident with a large contingent. Emergency chaplains were also on site. “The Hanover Criminal Police Service has started investigations into the cause of the accident,” informed the police.
