A man has been caught in Meru Town after he stole a carton of apples at Nkubu Stage in Meru County.

According to an eyewitness, people began to question the source of the apples when the suspect sold them for a low price.

“The owner called us from Nkubu, where one of his cartons had been stolen, and asked us to check to see if it was being sold in Meru Town. After we informed him that we traced the suspect, he asked us to apprehend him and wait for his arrival. The fruit is sold for Sh26 in Nairobi and Sh30 in Meru, but the suspect was selling it for Sh20,” said an eyewitness.

According to the suspect, he was eating a watermelon at the Nkubu stage when a driver asked him to watch over the apples.

“I was too preoccupied with my watermelon to notice when he left. After an hour, I decided to travel to Meru town because he had not returned. When I arrived in Meru Town, I was approached by a buyer who inquired as to how many there were and how much I was selling. I told him I’d sell a piece for Ksh 25, and he said he’d buy for Ksh 20 per piece,” he said.

The suspect said that he reached an agreement with the buyer and was apprehended while the pieces were being counted. He said that a rope was wrapped around his hands.

The owner of the apple arrived and displayed his phone’s CCTV footage of the suspect stealing the carton. He returned to Nkubu with the suspect, vowing to teach him a lesson that would serve as an example to the others.
