A lorry alleged to be owned by a construction company crashed into the rear of a motorcycle carrying a father and his two children in Ruiri-Buuri, Meru county. It dragged the motorcycle a few meters away from the scene where one of the children died.
An eyewitness said the father and his other child were taken to the hospital. He claimed that people had warned the lorry driver to slow down while he was filling the tires with air that morning.
“The driver said that he is paid per trip and more trips meant more money. The father was returning from picking them up from school as was his daily routine,” he said.
We, the bodaboda operators, condemn lorry drivers who drive at high speeds. We are occasionally forced to fall into trenches to allow them to pass. We must agree with the lorry drivers that they will be driven slowly, that we do not expect a similar incident to occur again, and that if it does occur, it will not go well with us.
My nephew is the father of the child who was killed. He normally drives his three children to Jacob Memorial School in the morning and picks them up after school.
The lorries belonging to a construction company are being driven recklessly. Drivers do not respect drivers in smaller vehicles because they believe they can break the law while constructing the road.
Another eyewitness said that another child had died the night before in a similar incident. she said the accident had occurred behind the AP’s camp. She strongly urged the relevant authorities to look into the matter.
